An introduction to the clàrsach, or Scottish harp, Wednesday 13th March 2024, 20:00, Dyvekes Vinkjeller

We are fortunate to be joined by musician Rachel Harrower for an introduction to her instrument, the clàrsach. This is Scotland’s oldest national instrument, with depictions dating back to the 8th century.

The event will be held on Wednesday 13th March, 20:00, at Dyvekes Vinkjeller, Hollendergaten 7, 5017 Bergen.

Founded in 1847, the RCS is the national centre for dance, drama, music, production and film in Scotland and was formerly know as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Rachel will take us through a history of the instrument, playing of the instrument and current developments in clàrsach music, as well as playing some tunes.

17th of May Constitution Day 2024

The society joins the 17th of May parade in Bergen each year and we look forward to doing the same again in 2024.

This is a real high point of the year for both locals and expats in Bergen. The best place to see the parade is from the parade, so bring your friends and family and come and join us!

The Bergen Scottish Society (BSS) will be participating in the Hovedprosesjonen, starting at Koengen. Look for our banner and men in kilts, and listen for the skirl of the pipes!

The parade leaves from Koengen at 10:30am, so if you’re planning on walking behind the BSS banner and the Bergen Pipes and Drums please make sure you’re there by 10:15 at the latest. From Koengen the parade will follow a predetermined route around the city centre and will end up at Festplassen.

We look forward to seeing you on the 17th of May!

Curling evening, Thursday 26th September 2024, 19:00 at Iskanten

As the autumn nights are fair drawing in, we thought that curling would be a fun activity for all the family.

This ancient game was probably first played in Scotland in the 1500's, before spreading to Europe and then North America. The rules of the game as played today were formalised in Scotland in the 19th century and the sport retains close cultural ties with its homeland.

We will book two lanes at Iskanten at 19:00. More details on tickets to follow.

Come and join us for some ice bound fun; no previous experience is required!
